Street Smarts: Staying Safe in an Urban Environment

Urban environments pose special safety risks to residents and travelers, especially at night. Dimly lit alleyways, isolated parking spots and sprawling public parks are perfect hideouts for criminals. Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect yourself. The tips below will teach you how to stay safe in the big city:

Carry only small sums of cash with you and hold onto your valuables tightly. Purse pockets should face into your body with the strap held firmly in one hand. Tuck wallets deep into pockets so they don’t protrude.

Avoid shortcuts through darkened areas; stick to well-lit, populated places.

Be sure you know where you’re going at all times. Muggers like to take advantage of people who look lost, preoccupied or otherwise vulnerable.

Don’t resist demands for your wallet, keys, etc. Saving these items isn’t worth the risk of personal injury.

Go to the nearest occupied building and ask for assistance if you feel that someone is following you.

Avoid using ATMs in isolated areas. The security cameras inside the stalls won’t protect you from being mugged.

Beware of people asking for directions; keep a safe distance when responding.

Walk in the direction of oncoming traffic. If someone in a car tries to accost you, you can run in the opposite direction of the car.

Park in well-lit areas and remember to lock your doors. When you get back in your car, be sure to always check the back seats before getting in.

Store valuables out of plain sight in your vehicle.

Keep doors locked at all times, even when driving. Keep windows rolled up when driving in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

Large cities are among the greatest destinations in our country. With a little offensive planning, you can enjoy the big city life – without becoming a victim.
