Carry
a pocketbook designed for safety. Purses that zip or snap shut
are much safer than those that stay open on top.
Wear
a purse with a long strap crossed over your chest (this deters
theft).
Drop
off big loads of shopping bags in your car's trunk instead of
carrying them through stores, restaurants and high-traffic areas.
Resist the
urge to put change, bills and credit cards in your coat pockets.
They could fall out easily. Take the extra time to return these
items to your wallet after purchases.
Dress
simply and comfortably. Someone wearing designer duds and lots
of jewelry is more likely to be targeted than a shopper sporting
jeans, sneakers and a baseball cap.
Remember where
your car is parked by recognizing details around you, such as
the nearest store entrance.
Park your
car in a well-lit area for those afternoons when the sun sets
early.
Have your keys
in-hand when you leave the building to return to your car. Never
hold your bag open and fish for your keys while standing outside
your car.
Know
where your children are at all times. It's very easy for kids
to be lured away by the bright lights and festive atmosphere of
the mall during the holidays. (During serious shopping excursions,
it's best to leave them at home.)
