Seasonal
Safety: Security tips for Winter
February 2003
During the winter
months, the odds of weather-related injury and accidents increase.
Building managers, property owners and homeowners must take special
precautions at this time of year to ensure the safety of family,
employees and visitors. Follow these tips to anticipate anything
"old man winter" blows your way:
Check
your oil tank, hot water burner or boiler on a regular basis to
avoid any unpleasant surprises on freezing cold days and nights.
Be familiar with the vital signs for each of these items, so you
know that they are working properly.
Lay
rock salt on any slick or icy surfaces to guard against injury
liability. Parking lots should be sanded. Stairs, sidewalks and
ramps should all have a safe level of traction. (Hint: Kitty litter
also works in place of rock salt!)
Dress
in warm layers whenever you are outdoors for long periods of time.
This is especially important for patrol officers in charge of
perimeter security, who can spend entire shifts in very cold conditions.
Wear
shoes with lug soles when walking on snowy, slushy ground. These
sturdy soles, with their thick grooves, protect you from slipping
and falling. Bring a change of shoes for office or other formal
environments.
Winterize your vehicle
if necessary with all-weather tires. They deliver an added level
of handling safety on frozen surfaces. If you have studded tires
on your vehicle, remember: they are only legal in Massachusetts
from November until the end of April.
Make
arrangements for a plow service to clear out any public spaces
on your property after a storm. This includes driveways, parking
lots and hills.
Know
the warning signs of frostbite: skin that is white or grayish-yellow
and feels hard or waxy; numbness; blistering; swelling; itching;
burning and deep pain when the area is warmed. See a doctor immediately
if you experience these symptoms.
During the winter,
be sure to take special precautions in order to stay "cool"
and collected in the face of extreme weather. Take heart; spring
is just around the corner!
