The
Great Outdoors: Security Tips for Summer Fun,
July 2002
Summer is here,
and with it comes the allure of outdoor events with friends and
family. Whether your free time finds you at the beach, camping under
the stars or attending a concert in the park, follow these instructions
to be sure that your "down time" is safe and enjoyable:
Store
your valuables out of sight in your car's trunk - or better yet,
leave them at home! Don't bring extra cash or expensive clothes
and jewelry on a casual outing.
Wear a money belt under your shorts when walking in crowds. This
is especially important if you find yourself in an urban setting
or an unfamiliar place.
Keep your kids in clear view at all times. Do not allow them to
wander!
Children should not wear items bearing their names in plain view.
This information makes it easy for strangers to pose as friends
and trick kids into trusting them.
Carry a Swiss Army knife with you. It's invaluable for everything
from picnics to starting a campfire!
Use the buddy system. Always go in pairs to places like the bathroom
and changing areas, especially after dark.
Designate
a pre-arranged meeting spot at large events, in case members of
your group become lost or separated.
Have a charged cell phone on-hand. It can be the fastest way to
call for help.
Seek out the safety professionals on duty when you arrive at your
destination. You never know when you'll need to enlist the help
of a lifeguard, forest ranger or security officer.
Make your summer
activities memorable by staying alert and aware of your surroundings.
Remember - getting there is half the fun, but being there is even
better!
