Be prepared: Security tips for creating an emergency procedures manual
June 2003
All businesses should have an Emergency Procedures Manual (EPM) to help respond to a wide variety of unforeseen problems and security infractions. By definition, an EPM establishes a method
of systematic, safe and orderly reaction to an emergency event, in the best possible time. Follow these tips to ensure that your company’s EPM is in top working order:
Familiarize your staff with your company’s EPM. If
it isn’t feasible for everyone to have his or her own copy, the original should always be available for reference.
Perform regular drills with your staff that
mimic emergency events. Acting out response procedures is the key to having a truly workable EPM and safety program.
Establish primary and secondary meeting places as emergency “command centers.” This is invaluable in stressful
situations requiring quick decisions.
Assign clear-cut duties to staff members to avoid confusion during stressful situations. Individuals should be responsible
for alerting coworkers, contacting authorities and leading the way to escape routes.
Work with security management professionals to conduct a thorough review of your EPM. South Shore Security can help you to
create and utilize your EPM to its fullest advantage.
Make sure the EPM is realistically matched to your industry, existing staff and resources.
Update the EPM regularly to reflect changing procedures, evacuation routes, personnel responsibilities and your current business
climate.
Revisit your EPM as your business grows and changes! A reliable EPM, along with trained and prepared staff members, is the key to maintaining a safe and secure environment.
