Planes,
trains and automobiles: Security tips for holiday travelers,
November 2002
Many of us will
travel a considerable distance to see family and friends this holiday
season. During this special time of year, safety on roadways, railways
and in the air is a tremendous concern. Follow these tips for a
successful trip, with many happy returns:
Arrive
early to airports, train stations and bus terminals to become
familiar with your surroundings and where you need to be. Call
beforehand to check on arrival times.
Don't
get frustrated by long waits or strict security procedures. Security
personnel are working hard to be helpful, thorough resources in
all high-risk areas and situations.
Take
note of any layovers or additional legs of your trip. Know where
and when you must re-board to continue on to your destination.
Secure
luggage with strong locks and contact information labels. Give
suitcases a splash of color with ribbons or paint to spot them
in endless conveyor belt lineups.
Keep
all necessities - tickets, boarding passes, passports, itineraries,
etc. - handy. Rifling through your belongings in crowded areas
can leave you vulnerable to theft.
Airports
can be exciting new places for children. Keep close tabs on them
and make sure they know to find the nearest security officer if
they get lost from your group.
If
you're taking your own vehicle, check its vital signs, including
all fluids and tire pressure, before making long road trips.
Rest
up in order to stay alert on the highway. Pull over in a well-lit
area to stretch, get coffee or sleep. Don't jeopardize the safety
of your passengers and fellow motorists.
Remembering
the rules of secure travel can be stressful, but we shouldn't forget
that the end result is time enjoyed with those we love. Make sure
you stay safe across the miles during the holiday season!
