Practice
common sense if you walk to and from school. Pay attention to
what's going on around you, especially traffic, and never go down
streets that are dark or unfamiliar to you.
Use
the buddy system: walk in groups at all times when you are outside.
Do
not accept a ride from someone you don't know, even if they know
your name or say they know your family. Be sure you know who is
driving you home.
Tell
the nearest teacher, police officer or other trustworthy adult
whenever you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, even if you're not
sure whether there is a real cause for alarm (it's better to be
safe than sorry).
Keep
your parents informed about where you will be after school. If
your plans change or you will be late, call your parents and let
them know.
Lock
the door behind you if you return to an empty house after school.
Then, call your parents to let them know you've made it home.
Ensure
safety in your dorm room by locking the door whenever you're not
there, even if it's just to walk down the hall for a few minutes.
Locate
the Office of Safety and Security on your campus and know their
phone number.
Be
safe on-campus after dark. Know where the "blue light"
or emergency phones are located. Walk in pairs or have security
escort you. Don't tote valuables such as laptops and jewelry.
This is important whether your school is in the big city or the
"quiet" countryside.
Report
all security incidents immediately (break-ins, assaults, theft
and/or vandalism) in order to ensure your own safety as well as
the safety of everyone around you.
